Workflow

How to replace text in a PDF online

Upload a PDF, enter the text to find and its replacement, choose which pages to update, and download the edited file. Works in a desktop or mobile browser without installing software.

Upload your PDF

Drop the file onto the upload area or pick it from your device. The maximum file size is 25 MB. Your PDF is sent over HTTPS and processed on the server only for this session.

Enter find and replace text

Type the exact characters you want to replace, then type the new text. Matching is case-sensitive. The tool highlights every occurrence on the page thumbnails so you can confirm before applying changes.

Select pages

Tick the checkboxes for pages that should be updated. Leave other pages unchecked so they remain identical to the original. This is useful when only one section of a long document needs a fix.

Download the edited PDF

Run the replacement and save the new PDF to your computer or phone. The output does not add a watermark. Temporary server copies are deleted automatically within about one hour.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is PDF Text Replace really free?

Yes — it's free for everyone, with no signup, no watermark, no trial period, and no daily limit. The site is funded by Google ads, not by selling features.

Will the original font and color be preserved?

We try to match the original text size and color when possible. If the original font is embedded in the PDF and the replacement text fits in the same space, results look near-identical. For very stylized fonts the replacement may fall back to a similar typeface.

Can I edit a scanned PDF?

Not yet. If your PDF is a scanned image, the text isn't selectable — it's just pixels. You'd need to run OCR (optical character recognition) first. We may add OCR support later.

Is my file private?

Your file is uploaded to our server, processed, and automatically deleted within one hour. We never share files, never use them for AI training, and don't keep logs of file contents.

Why did my replacement text overflow?

PDFs use absolute positioning — each character has fixed coordinates. If your new text is wider than the old, it can spill into nearby content. Try a shorter replacement, or break the change into smaller edits.

Can I replace text on only some pages?

Yes — that's the whole point of the page selector. Tick the pages you want edited and untick the rest. The other pages won't be touched.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes — the site works on iPhone and Android. Page previews are rendered as images so even a small screen can show them clearly.

What's the file size limit?

25 MB per upload. If you have a bigger PDF, try splitting it first with a free PDF splitter.
